Cyprus Health Tourism Council President Dr. Ahmet Savaşan emphasized that the Struggle and Martyrs Week, which started on December 21, constitutes the most meaningful days of the glorious struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people for existence and that without this determined resistance, there would be no Turkish Cypriot presence on the island of Cyprus today.
Without the resistance, our political existence would not have taken shape...
Drawing attention to the importance of the 21-25 December Struggle and Martyrs Week in a television program he attended, Ahmet Savaşan said, “There is no doubt that every stage of our glorious struggle for existence has historical importance. We should not forget that this sacred struggle, which was won at the cost of the blood and lives of hundreds of martyrs, started with the determined and organized resistance put forward on the night of December 21 and the following days. If it were not for the determined attitude displayed by the Turkish Cypriot people and leadership during this week, our current state structure would not have emerged and our current political existence would not have been shaped.”.
The historical struggle must be well explained...
Emphasizing that if we want to tell the world that the problem in Cyprus stems from the Greek Cypriots’ efforts to claim the whole island on their own and that the Turkish Cypriot people do not allow this to happen, it is necessary to convey what happened on December 21, 1963 and the following days to new generations and to tell the world, Ahmet Savaşan said, “When we fail to reveal these historical facts, it becomes difficult for us to explain why we want two separate states or equal sovereignty on the island. We must understand, explain and memorize these historical days of struggle.”.
December 21 resistance must not be forgotten...
“The elections we will soon hold will once again demonstrate to the whole world our political existence and our ability to govern ourselves,” Ahmet Savaşan said, adding that “however, if we forget that it is thanks to the resistance of December 21 that we are able to exercise the right to self-government, which is one of the most fundamental human rights, we will pave the way for the days when we will not be able to exercise this right.” He concluded his message by saying, “In this meaningful week, while bowing with respect once again in the presence of all our martyrs, I wish a healthy life to our veterans and mercy to the resistance fighters we lost.”.
